Glossary View

The Glossary View provides a structured, document-style interface for exploring and managing terms in your model. It is designed for focused reading, taxonomy browsing, and business glossary review without the visual complexity of the full graph canvas.

When no specific term is selected, the Glossary View displays a Model Overview card featuring model metadata, total metrics (terms, relations, root concepts), and direct links to top-level domain concepts. When a term is selected, it presents the complete term documentation record.

The Glossary View shares the same standardized layout as the standalone Business Glossary export, ensuring a consistent user experience whether you are working within Termboard or sharing an exported glossary document.

Accessing Glossary View

You can open the Glossary View using any of the following methods:

  1. Top Navigation Menu: Navigate to View > Glossary View.
  2. Term Details Sidebar: When viewing a term in Graph mode, click the Open Glossary View icon in the details sidebar header.
  3. Direct URL: Add or open a link with query parameters ?view=glossary (or ?view=glossary&term=<term-id> to load a specific concept directly; legacy ?view=term is also supported).

To return to the interactive graph canvas at any time, click Back to Graph in the header. The canvas will automatically center on the currently selected term.

The left sidepanel provides quick navigation across all terms in your model:

  • List vs. Hierarchy Toggle:
    • List: Displays all terms in alphabetical order.
    • Hierarchy: Renders a collapsible taxonomy tree organized by generalization and parent-child relations. Active branches and matching descendants expand automatically upon selection or search.
  • Match Counter: Shows the total count of matching terms (e.g., 42 terms).
  • Quick Search: Filter terms by name or definition in real-time. Press the / key from anywhere on the page to focus the search input instantly.
  • Term-Type Filter Chips: Narrow the visible terms by semantic type (e.g., Concept, Policy, Requirement, Metric). Click All to clear filters.

Term Details Document (Right Column)

When a term is selected, the right column presents a comprehensive metadata document organized into the following sections:

1. Taxonomic Breadcrumbs

If the term is part of a generalization hierarchy, a breadcrumb path appears at the top (e.g., Base Entity > Account > Checking Account). Click any ancestor term in the breadcrumb path to navigate directly to its detail page.

2. Header and Actions

The header displays the term name alongside its semantic type badge (color-coded to your domain profile) and action buttons:

  • Inherited Relations Toggle: Controls whether indirect relations inherited from taxonomic ancestor concepts are shown. This top-level toggle simultaneously controls all segments of the term document:
    • Natural Language Statements: Shows only direct statements when OFF; includes inherited statements with ancestor provenance tags when ON.
    • Interactive Neighborhood Graph: Displays the direct 1-hop neighborhood when OFF; includes inherited connections when ON.
    • Connected Relations: Lists direct non-generalization relations when OFF; appends inherited relations with ancestor chips when ON.
    • Copy Markdown: Exports active statements and relations matching the current toggle state. The toggle state is remembered across terms in your browser session.
  • Copy Markdown: Copies the term's complete documentation record, including active statements and relationships formatted in Markdown, to your clipboard.
  • Copy Link: Copies a direct permalink (?view=glossary&term=<term-id>) to your clipboard for sharing with team members.
  • Edit / Done: Toggles inline edit mode, allowing you to update the term name, description, and rich-text additional information directly without leaving the page.
  • Back to Graph: Returns immediately to the full Cytoscape graph canvas and centers on the active term.

3. Synonyms

Displays known synonyms and alternative labels as compact tags beneath the header.

4. Description & Auto-Linking

The primary textual definition of the term. Mentioned terms from your model are automatically highlighted as clickable links (LinkedText), allowing rapid navigation through connected domain concepts.

5. Additional Information

Rich-text documentation supporting formatted paragraphs, bullet lists, tables, and hyperlinks. When Edit mode is active, an integrated rich-text editor allows formatting modifications in place.

6. Custom Fields (XFields)

Displays domain-specific attributes configured in your model (such as Criticality, Data Owner, Classification, or Review Status). Custom fields are presented in a clean responsive grid of cards.

7. External Catalog & LDM Mappings

If terms are linked to external database tables, columns, or enterprise data catalog entries (such as DataHub or Collibra), this section displays:

  • Source system name and status badge (e.g., verified).
  • Target technical entity name and container.
  • Direct outbound link to open the asset in the external system.

8. Natural Language Statements (Verbalisations)

Expresses model relationships as declarative English sentences (for example, "Customer Account belongs to Customer"):

  • Direct Statements: Present when the top "Inherited relations" toggle is OFF or ON.
  • Inherited Statements: Visible when "Inherited relations" is ON, displaying a from <Ancestor> provenance chip.
  • Counter Badge: The section counter dynamically reflects the count of visible statements matching the toggle.

9. Sub-Concepts & Super-Concepts

Displays taxonomic parent and child concepts as interactive cards:

  • Super-Concepts (Parents): Immediate ancestor concepts in the generalization hierarchy.
  • Sub-Concepts (Children): Specialized child concepts (subtypes).
  • Expandable Previews: Definitions can be expanded individually or with section-wide "Expand All" / "Collapse All" controls. Clicking any card navigates to that term.

10. Interactive Neighborhood Graph

Located directly below Sub-Concepts, this embedded interactive SVG canvas visualizes the active term's 1-hop semantic network:

  • Semantic Quadrants: Connected concepts are positioned deterministically by relationship role:
    • North: Taxonomic parents / generalizations.
    • South: Child concepts / sub-types.
    • East: Outgoing direct relations.
    • West: Incoming direct relations.
    • Upper West: Inherited relations from parent concepts (visible when the top toggle is ON).
  • Draggable Nodes: Nodes can be repositioned on canvas with real-time edge recalculation.
  • Dynamic Scope: Renders "Direct Neighborhood (1-hop)" when the top toggle is OFF, and "Direct & Inherited Neighborhood" when the top toggle is ON.
  • Node Navigation: Clicking any neighbor node navigates the detail view to that term.

11. Connected Relations List

A standardized list of incoming and outgoing connections formatted as Subject-Predicate-Object triples:

  • Generalization Filter: Pure generalization relations (is a) are excluded from this list since they are already presented in the Super/Sub-concepts section.
  • Direction Indicators: Visual relation pills with directional arrows (→).
  • Inheritance Origin & Interactive Popovers: When the top toggle is ON, inherited relations appear with a from <Ancestor> chip. Hovering opens an ancestor preview and scope notes; clicking navigates directly to that ancestor.
  • Relation Descriptions: Contextual descriptions or business rules attached to the relationship appear directly beneath the triple.
  • Clickable Links: Neighbor terms appear as bold links; clicking either side navigates immediately to that term.
  • Counter Badge: Reflects the number of currently displayed relations matching the top toggle.
