Working with Templates
Templates in Termboard provide a pre-configured starting point for specific types of diagrams. Instead of starting from scratch, a template sets up the necessary XFields (custom fields), Document Settings, and minimal Example Content to show you the intended structure.
Accessing Templates
You can find all available templates by navigating to: File > New from Template
This will open the Start from Template dialog where you can choose the structure that best fits your needs.
Available Templates
Termboard currently offers the following specialized templates:
User Story Map
Designed for agile product management and user story mapping.
- Categories: Activity, Story
- Pre-configured XFields:
- Release: Dropdown to track which release a story belongs to.
- Status: Track implementation progress.
- Best for: Visualizing product backlogs and planning releases.
Conceptual Data Model
Designed for database design and information modeling.
- Categories: Entity, Attribute
- Pre-configured XFields:
- Data Type: Specify the type of data for each attribute.
- Primary Key: Boolean flag to identify unique keys.
- Best for: Designing database schemas and conceptual information structures.
Mind Map
Designed for hierarchical brainstorming and idea organization.
- Categories: Topics
- Pre-configured XFields:
- Priority: Dropdown (High/Medium/Low) that auto-colors nodes (Red/Orange/Green).
- Status: Track the progress of an idea (Drafted, Researching, Complete).
- Best for: Brainstorming sessions, organizing thoughts, and planning projects.
Process Flow
Designed for creating flowcharts and business processes.
- Categories: Start, Activity, Decision, End
- Pre-configured XFields:
- Step Type: Automatically changes the shape (Diamond for decisions, Ellipse for start/end).
- Owner: Define who is responsible for each step.
- Best for: Mapping out workflows, user journeys, and decision trees.
Why use Templates?
- Speed: No need to manually create the same XFields every time.
- Consistency: Ensures all your story maps or data models use the same terminology and structure.
- Best Practices: Templates are designed with recommended settings (e.g., cardinality enabled for data models).
Customizing Templates
Once you load a template, it behaves like any other Termboard document. You can:
- Add more XFields
- Change the colors and shapes of existing categories
- Modify document settings in the Settings sidebar
If you find yourself frequently customizing a template in the same way, remember that you can save your customized version as a JSON file and load it later to use as your own personal template.
